Matt truly dominated his event with a string of impressive wins, all won by the maximum score possible (Ippon) with either a submission or some very impressive text book throws. Photo left showing Matt being presented with  the gold medal.

The club also had Bryn Jones competing in the under 73kg category, without doubt the toughest category of the event. Bryn won through the first few rounds with some great fights getting all the way through to the quarter finals, where unfortunately he lost to the eventual winner of the event. Katy Rae Darcy followed this with an outstanding series of fights winning her the gold in the Girls H/W novice class, spurred on by the win she also entered the girls open graded event where after a hard fought battle against heavier and more experienced players she managed to win through to take a bronze medal.

Luke Dexter fighting in his first competition carried the success on by winning the silver medal in the boy’s 45kg Novice class. Luke then made the decision that he would also fight in the open graded event.  Luke spirit and determination coupled with some excellent throws earned him a well deserved silver medal against these more experienced players.

Well done to all 3 on starting the year off so successfully.

Well done to all 3 on finishing the year off with more success for the club.

An extremely Successful November for the Club

Firstly two of the Clubs newest members Ben Kyte and Alan Jones entered the IBC National Championships held in High Wycombe, with the idea of gaining some valuable experience.

On the day both players had to fight in an event against players that were bigger and more experienced. But despite this disadvantage Ben and Alan fought to an exceptional standard for players that were relatively new to the sport. Both had impressive wins in the early rounds winning with both standing and groundwork techniques.  Both made it out of the first round pools to the knockout stage with Ben winning through to the Bronze medal position and Alan finishing just 1 place behind.  An excellent result for both players.

The month carried on with more success for the club with a number of players attending both the junior and senior gradings. They all performed to the highest of standards gaining the full grades possible. Members had to demonstrate a series of throws and groundwork moves (Syllabus/Theory) and take contesting line ups (fights).

The results were as follows:  Seniors (adults) – Matt Bratton – Brown; Ben Kyte – Green; Alan Jones – Orange and Anthony Smith – Yellow. Juniors: Christian Hart and Sam Marston – Green; Ronan Jones and Jake Wilson – Orange + 2 Green; Johnny West, William Hopkins and Curtis Hewins – Yellow; Luke Dexter White + 3 Red and Toby Mason – White + 2 Red.

26th June 2010 – Matt wins his second International Medal

26th June 2010 – BJA Kent International Championship – Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

3 players from the Club travelled down to the National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace to compete in the BJA Kent International Championship.

The event had over 1000 competitors taking part and they included players from all over Europe.

Matt Bratton was competing in the +73 kg category and impressively won through the earlier rounds. As the event went on the opponents got tougher and in the semi-finals Matt had to give everything to win his way through to the final. The final between Matt and another player of equal size and stature from Bristol proved to be exhausting for both players.  As time ticked away the heat and humidity in the sports hall was draining both the player’s strength and when the fight went to the ground Matt’s opponent ended up with the upper hand getting Matt in a hold down. As usual Matt did not give up and on several occasions nearly managed to escape the hold, but unfortunately he just hadn’t got enough strength left.

The fight finished with the usual shaking of hands with both players leaving the mat area with no energy left.

Matt’s silver medal was an impressive result for a player that’s been doing the sport for less than two years.  The Club coaches put Matt’s success down to his natural sporting ability, coupled with all the hard work he puts in at the Club and a brilliant attitude.  Well done.

The other competitors from the club that went were Bryn Jones and Callum McDonald who both fought exceptional well but unfortunately didn’t get through to the medals. Both players gained from the experience with Bryn moving up a weight category fighting much bigger players than he’s normally used to and Callum throwing a couple of text book throws on his way to eventually losing in the semi-finals.

June 2010 – Junior Grading

Congratulations to all those members that took part in the recent gradings held at Digby, Lincolnshire and Earl Shilton. All those that were grading from the club performed to the highest of standards with all gaining the full grade possible. Members had to demonstrate a series of throws and groundwork moves (Syllabus/Theory) and take contesting line ups (fights).

The results were as follows:  William Smith, Alex Smith, Richard Smith and Luke Marston were awarded Yellow belts with Matt Bratton being awarded his Green belt with 1 blue tab.

15th – 16th May 2010 – 3 from club represent GB in International Championship – Mierlo – Holland

3 players from the Club had been selected to represent  the National Squad at a Major International Event held in Mierlo, Holland held on the 15th and 16th May 2010.  For all 3 this was the first time they had competed in an international event and none of them went with any illusion that it would be easy. They had already done extremely well to get selected. The event had circa 1000 competitors from throughout Europe and represented the best players from each Country.

Matt Bratton was competing in the +73 kg category.  Matt was a rank outsider in his event being the lowest grade, the least experienced and the smallest player in the group.  However the rest of the field were soon to realise that he was there to win.  Matt’s shear determination, strength and fitness levels coupled with his technical ability shocked his opponents has he battled his way through a series of extremely tough fights which he won impressively.   Matt found himself in the final against an opponent who had decimated the rest of the field. The final was an impressive display of grit and determination from Matt against a much more experience and technical opponent.  Matt was leading the fight for most of the way when his opponent just managed to catch him with a high speed text book throw to secure the win. Matt therefore won the silver, an impressive feat by such a new player to the sport.

Bryn Jones competed in the -66kg class and as always fought to an exceptionally high standard to get him through the first and second rounds of the competition. The 3rd round saw Bryn face someone of equal size, strength and ability which lead to a very exiting fight to watch in which Bryn started off with a superb scoring throw to give him the lead. Bryn shortly followed this up with a move to groundwork where he secured a strangle technique on his opponent which would have usually lead to a submission. Unfortunately this was started near the edge of the contest area and the referee stopped the contest and bought them back to the centre of the mat. A series of fast attacks from both players then ended with Bryn’s opponent catching him with a well executed technique and taking the win.

Callum McDonald was competing in the -60kg class and was one of the lowest grades in the category. Despite this he fought extremely well managing to match his much higher graded opposition. Unfortunately in the second round he strained his back which hindered his ability to use his exceptional speed. This handicap proved too much to enable him to progress past his opponent who was of an exceptional standard and actually went on to win the event.

All 3 are now off to Crystal Place on the 26th June to compete at another Major International Competition.   Watch this space to see how they do.

Sunday 7th March 2010 – Junior and Senior Grading Results

Congratulations to all those members that took part in the recent Area grading held at Ashby de la Zouch. The club had an exceptional day with all those who went gaining their full grade possible. Members had to demonstrate a series of throws and groundwork moves (Syllabus/Theory) and take contesting line ups (fights) consisting of 3 to 6 players depending on the grade they were trying for.

The results were as follows: Innes Droomer (Orange belt + 1 green tab); Matthew Bratton (Orange belt + 2 green tabs); Callum McDonald, Matthew Holmes, Tom Holmes, Neale Farthing, Ben Hall and Scott Stevens (Green belt); Karl Batchelor (Green belt + 1 blue tab); Harry Jones ( Green belt + 2 blue tabs); and finally Bryn Jones (Full brown belt).
